A week from today will be a big step in my obsession with off road triathlon. A 70.3 mile half-ironman, off road, self-supported solo. Excited doesn’t even begin to capture it! 1.2 mile open water swim (Canandaigua), 56 mile mountain bike (Greenway), 13.1 mile trail run (FLT Letchworth)… Wish me luck!

ADIRONDACK GREAT RANGE TRAVERSE #goals
My friend Gabe is evil. He knows how my brain works. So he should know better than to suggest what Backpacker Magazine refers to as “the third hardest dayhike in America.” Because it’s less than a 5 hour drive away. Naturally, I’m not just going to want to do it, I’m going to want to … Continue reading
AWESOME SOLO STORIES VIA @MYOO #adventure
Rowing oceans alone? Scaling mountains solo? I love this stuff – these are the stories and people who inspire me! Because, really, compared to this stuff? What’s a 50 mile run? Or a 100 mile bike? Child’s play. Get inspired! link: MYOO: Going Stag: Journeys To The Edge of the World
DEEP WATER – A CAUTIONARY TALE #sailing #adventure #lifelessons
My wife and I recently watched the documentary DEEP WATER (on Netflix) – about Donald Crowhurst’s ill-fated 1968/69 non-stop, solo, around-the-world sailing attempt. Fascinating, ballsy stuff with great original footage and a very cohesive telling of a complicated story. A heart-wrenching tale. A cautionary tale. I won’t spoil the plot (and, yes, it’s a true … Continue reading
WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN 2012? #resolutions #athlete #adventure
I know a lot of folks don’t get hung up on the “new year resolutions” and I typically don’t, but I do find our annual calendar switch a very valuable time for reflection… on the year past, on the year ahead. On life in general. So, what are you doing next year? Not “I’m going … Continue reading
RECOVERY + REFLECTION >> #ultra
Well, it’s been a few days since successfully completing my first ultra. Obviously, I’ve been layin’ low. Wasn’t sure how my body would react since a 40 mile trail run is twice the distance I’ve put my body through before, but so far, so good! Am I hooked on ultras now? Um, very, very much!
I WILL HAVE BECOME A DIFFERENT PERSON #trail #ultra
Whenever I undertake a major event I like to post a “before” and “after” reflection piece. Tomorrow I’m going to attempt trail running 40 miles (65k) solo in one day; I think that qualifies as a major event. I took the last 10 days off to let my body recover and rest fully prior to … Continue reading
CRESCENT 65K TRAIL RUN #SOLO
Two weeks from today I’m tackling my first trail ultra – 65k (40 miles) of trail, solo. Cannot wait!
ROZ SAVAGE #adventurer
I stumbled across Roz Savage’s book ROWING THE ATLANTIC at my local library and have been ploughing through it… such an amazing read! I was not familiar with Roz before. It’s funny, even though one thinks that “the last great adventures” (i.e. – South Pole, North Pole, Everest, etc.) have come and gone, I never … Continue reading
